How Safe is the ECA Stack?

If you want to lose weight fast and you are considering the ECA stack, make sure you read this article before trying it! This is potentially a huge topic to write about so I will try to keep it as brief as I can with as much science to back it up as I can.

What is the ECA stack?

The ECA stack is a drug combination of ephedrine, caffeine, and aspirin that can be used to assist in rapid weight loss. Here are the details of each drug in this stack:


The only compound in this stack with significant independent fat burning effects. [1]


Caffeine acts somewhat synergistically with ephedrine and other fat burners to help the increase the fat burning effects. [2]


Aspirin is usually combined in this fat burning stack to try to offset the possible blood clotting side effects of ephedrine. That said, aspirin on its own is dangerous and is linked to various organ side effects. [7]

How safe is ephedrine?

First let’s go over a little bit of the legal history of ephedrine in the USA [3]:

  • In 2004, the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) created a ban on ephedrine alkaloids from being marketed as anything other than treating asthma, colds, other disease, or traditional Asian use.
  • In 2005, a U.S. District court ruled that the FDA did not have evidence that low dosages of ephedrine alkaloid is unsafe.
  • In 2006, a U.S. District court upheld the FDA’s final rule that ephedrine alkaloids cannot be marketed as dietary supplements.

So even though the FDA failed to provide evidence that ephedrine is unsafe in low dosages, they were able to get it banned from being marketed in dietary supplements. How where they able to do this? Like any other stimulants, “more” doesn’t always mean “better” (and “too much” can become “fatal”). Some people are also more sensitive to stimulants than others which makes dosage hard to determine. This makes it easy for the average person to overdose on ephedrine than other drugs.

When ingested, ephedrine is known to cause a slight increase in blood pressure (5-23mg HG systole), increase in adrenaline levels, and decrease in serum potassium. This makes it so that supplementing with ephedrine is not suitable for those with heart problems or high blood pressure. [1]

Because of it slightly increases blood pressure, ephedrine is often supplemented with aspirin or fish oil to help reduce the chance of blood clotting.

One notable study showed that ephedrine can cause nephrolithiasis (kidney stones) in cases of abuse. [4] This could be because prolonged use of ephedrine causes your body to lose potassium and magnesium. Insufficient potassium and magnesium levels is associated with kidney stones formation. [5]

How safe is caffeine?

Very safe. [2]

How safe is aspirin?

Prolonged aspirin usage is linked to stomach ulcers, stomach bleeding, tinnitus, and liver failure. [6] Sounds nasty doesn’t it? Because aspirin can also potentially be dangerous, a lot of experts now recommend supplementing with fish oil (a super safe alternative) instead of aspirin to counter side effects of ephedrine.

So how safe is the ECA stack, really?

If you are reasonably healthy and are following proper dosage instructions, the ECA stack is as safe as any other fat burning stack out there. That said, I’d recommend replacing aspirin with fish oil to reduce the risks even further.

So you’ve decided to take the EC stack?

Where do you find ephedrine?

In the USA, you cannot find any dietary supplements with ephedrine in it, BUT you can find ephedrine in OTC bronchial congestion medication such as bronkaid and primatene tablets.

WHERE DO YOU FIND caffeine and fish oil?

What is the recommended dosing protocol?

The chart above shows the dosing protocol for two cycles of the EC stack with weeks 5-6 and weeks 11-12 being the OFF weeks.

How to read the chart:

  • 12.5mgE = 12.5mg of ephedrine HCL or ephedrine sulface
  • 25mgE = 25mg of ephedrine HCL or ephedrine sulface
  • 100mgC = 100mg of caffeine
  • 200mgC = 200mg of caffeine

Dosage notes and warnings:

  1. There are many reasons to not use this stack. If you have any cardiovascular, kidney or adrenal issues then you should not use this stack. In fact, if you have ANY health issues, you should not be using this stack. You can always check with your doctor first.
  2. Do not take the EC stack with any other source of caffeine including tea, coffee, even soda.
  3. Drink extra water each day.
  4. If you have bladder issues or are experiencing any discomfort, try decreasing your dose.
  5. Make sure that you’re eating at least your BMR each day.
  6. Taking an asthma inhaler while on EC can lead to overdose since asthma inhalers contain ephedrine.
  7. Do not take when you will be exposed to the sun or when you are in overheated conditions. External heat and the thermogenic effects of ephedrine can lead to heat strokes, dehydration, and many other unpleasant things.
  8. Stop using the stack if you experience irregular heart beats, skipped heart beats, high blood pressure, panic, dizziness, agitation, or anything else that concerns you.
  9. Extreme activities should be avoided (for example, HIIT). Try to not exceed 80% of your max heart rate when doing cardio. Weightlifting is okay provided that you rest adequately. Listen to your body!

So you’ve decided that the ECA stack is not for you?

Check out this alternative, safer fat burning stack.

I have used this alternative stack in the past to help be get rid of stubborn fat cells in my belly fat. These ingredients are the core ingredients in many heavily marketed fat burners (which all come with a huge price tag). Why pay for top dollars for heavily marketed products when you can build your own stack that is just as effective for a much cheaper price? You’ll have the peace of mind of knowing exactly what goes into your body (not a mysterious “proprietary blend” of ingredients). I also prefer single ingredient products, since it’ll allow me to vary my dosage depending on how my body responds.

Without further adieu, here are the ingredients:

  • Yohimbe is an alkaloid with stimulant and aphrodisiac effects. It is used to help increase blood flow to the adipose tissues (where the majority of your body fats are stored). Increased blood flow tothe adipose tissues also means increased hormones and enzymes required for releasing stored fats into the bloodstream for muscle consumption. Basically yohimbe helps convert stored fats into FFA’s and helps mobilizes those FFA’s to your mucles.
  • Acetyl L-Carnitine or ALCAR has many health benefits, but in reference to fat burning, ALCAR is used to help move FFA’s into muscle cells’ mitochondria.  Without enough ALCAR, a bunch of FFA’s will just sit outside of the muscle cell staying unburnt.
  • Green Tea Extract helps increase metabolism by inducing thermogenesis (increasing body temperature) all over your body and in the adipose tissues. The EGCG present in green tea extract is the active ingredient for increasing this fat oxidation process.
  • Caffeine is a substance that most of you are familiar with. When active, caffeine effects the central nervous system to wake you up. In addition to giving you mental clarity and focus, it also tells your adrenal glands to release more adrenaline (a fight or flight hormone). Adrenaline helps increase your heart rate (which increases blood flow and in turn increases FFA mobility) and helps open up air passages in your lungs.

Alternative Fat Burning Stack Dosage

Now that we know what supplements work, we need to know how much and when to take these supplements. This section will help you build your own fat burning stack to achieve results that are almost comparable to the ECA stack.

Here are the how much you should take of each ingredient each day.

I am no PromaForce salesman or anything, but I like the PrimaForce brand because I have found their products to be the best bang for the buck (high value and low cost) compared to all the other brands. They provide pure ingredients while some other brands include “proprietary” filler mixes into it.

Dosage Schedule

SAMPLE Schedule for a morning workout:

  • Pre-Workout (6:45 AM)
    • 2.5 mg Yohimbe
    • 100 mg Caffeine
    • 500 mg ALCAR
    • 500 mg Green Tea Extract
    • 10 g BCAA (recommended for fasted training)
  • Workout (7-8 AM)
  • Breakfast (8 AM)
  • Lunch (12 PM)
  • 6-8 Hours after workout (4 PM)
    • 2.5 mg Yohimbe
    • 100 mg Caffeine
    • 500 mg ALCAR
    • 500 Green Tea Extract
  • Dinner (6 PM)

SAMPLE Schedule for a evening workout:

  • Breakfast (8 AM)
    • 2.5 mg Yohimbe
    • 100 mg Caffeine
    • 500 mg ALCAR
    • 500 mg Green Tea Extract
  • Lunch (12 PM)
  • Pre-Workout (4:45 PM)
    • 2.5 mg Yohimbe

Important Dosage Tips

  • Consult a doctor to make sure you can handle these stimulating supplements. All these supplements has stimulant properties.
  • STOP TAKING IT IF YOU SUSPECT ANYTHING IS WRONG. (Sorry for the CAPS, but it’s very important to be more safe than sorry).
  • Stay on this schedule for 3 weeks, and then take 1 week off of the supplements before continuing again.  Repeating 3 weeks on and 1 week off allows your body to recover from the supplements and helps you avoid building tolerance or withdrawal symptoms.
  • If your body responds well to the dosage schedule above, stick to it. If your body still hasn’t responded after the first 3+1 weeks cycle, try increasing your dosage for the next 3+1 weeks cycle. Make sure to not exceed the maximum recommended dosage though! (refer to “Creating Your Own Fat Burning Stack” section).
  • Do not take more than 3 months. These supplements are meant to help you jumpstart your weight loss regime.
  • Remember that this article shows you how to lose weight fast exercising. You will get best results if you “supplement” these supplements to your regular exercise schedule and a healthy diet (see these weight loss tips to get started).

    Thanks for your input. I am not a Primaforce rep. I was just a fat guy who used their product to help me get skinny (see about). In fact, I don’t really care what brand you use to get results (I even linked to a SciVation supplement in this post). There are tons of other brands out there that sell ingredient specific supplements for you to build your own fat burning stack. I’m just sharing what worked for me.

    I’m a bit defensive because I put in a lot of work into this blog to try to share what I consider to be valuable knowledge and every once in a while I get people/trolls like Joe and you who come around and trample all over it. How would you feel if somebody just tramples all over your hard work? My comments are certainly not uncalled-for.

    I tried the vitamins you suggested…the only thing was that the Sesamin is 1000mg. Can I take it in one shot once in the middle of the day? Also,if I work out at 9pm …what should my supplements intake be? Lastly, taking all these supplements together jaked me up…I was aware and really felt it…it had some problems falling asleep. But the feeling and sensitivity made me feel somewhat uncomfortable. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

    About the Sesamin, it’s preferred that you take it throughout the day, since your body can only process so much of it if you take it all at once. I do the same thing with my Opti-men multi-vitamins. It requires me to take 3 pills each day so I split them up to breakfast, lunch, and dinner to maximize absorption.

    Yeah! The stuff does hit you pretty hard doesn’t it? That’s how I lost my stubborn fats. In terms of sensitivity, try removing caffeine from the equation, or take a lower dosage of it. A cup (8 oz) of green tea contains anywhere between 15mg – 40mg of caffeine. A cup of black tea: 40mg – 80mg. A cup of instant coffee 50-100mg of caffeine. Espresso coffees are way too strong at 100mg per 2 oz. Find what’s comfortable for you.

    What time do you normally go to sleep? It’s generally not recommended to workout right before you sleep, even if you don’t take any stimulants. What happens is your body gets naturally stimulated during exercise and this interferes with your deep sleep (which is good for a bunch of things, including muscles recovery & growth). You will either have to sleep later or workout earlier.

    Can I take a 1000mg Sesamin Pill and cut the pill itself in half, since I bought it already.
    Yesterday I worked out at noon and took the Supplements at 7pm. Went to sleep at midnight and could not fall asleep> I really felt the Supplements. Any suggestion?

    I tried cutting the Sesamin pill in half myself but it doesn’t work that well. There’s sesamin oil inside the pill so you’ll end up making a mess. The first time I took the stack, I ordered the pills because they were more convenient than the pure oil kind. I took 1000mg at noon and 1000mg before I went to bed to try to compensate for the absorption and it seemed to work pretty well.

    You should take the pills earlier. I’d say at least 6 hours before you go to bed. There are products like Controlled Labs Reduction PM (affiliate link) that helps with this problem (I’ve also taken it myself), but there’s really no need to buy and use it if you can just alter your schedule and just take the stack earlier (saves the money in your wallet and saves your liver from doing extra work).

    This is a really nice article, I actually include all of them on top of Tim Ferris’ PAGG, green tea extract is one of these.

    I normally just pop Carnitine throughout the day. My body fat is at 13.7 right now, trying to drop a little more. Normal food intake + workout would be really hard for any guy to drop below 15%, in order to see six pack, some extra stuff is needed.

    My next step is taking some cold water swimming in hoping to drop another 2% of bodyfat.

I am taking the lowest daily dose of everything and I’m currently doing the P90x/Insanity Hybrid workout since i’ve already completed both workout plans separately. To be honest I am in great shape but I still have about 8 pounds of bodyfat that just refuses to go away!I figured it’s because I’m 32 now and I have a serious weakness for chocolate…. 🙁 I am 5’8″ 180 pounds and I’m trying to get down to about 170, nice and lean.

    I am on day 5 of the Evening Workout plan. I must say today has been the worst day for side effects. Mainly the ‘Hot Flashes’ feeling coupled with occasional jitters. I think it’s because I am taking the 200mg daily dose of caffeine with my morning pills and then I had a 20oz diet soda with my breakfast because I was craving something cold and bubbly. Yeah that was a mistake, thanks jitters. I’m sure I’ll be fine by lunch though. As for the hot, sweaty feeling, I’m pretty sure this is normal for the pill regimen. So I will finish this out for 3 weeks and see how it works. Hopefully two cycles and I can be beach ready!

    Hey, this is a great article. I actually just bought all this stuff and I’m going to go by what you said. My work out schedule is 3 days lifting, three days high intensity interval training with some long distance throughout. I’m just curious, should I only use this stack on certain days. For example, only lifting days, only running days, both, including resting days (7 days a weeks)? Any advice would be extremely useful.

    Actually the ECA stack is completely safe. It was banned in the US because obese morons took 20 pills a day hoping for some miracle. I used the ECA stack for years and I still cut with it to this day. If you use the supplement as directed there will be no adverse effects. This has been talked about for years now in the industry and it’s mutually agreed by everyone.

    Read the Instructions, follow a plan. Stop using it for 3 months after your first cycle then rinse repeat if you want.

    I’m on my 5th week of P90X and I started using this stack at the same time I started P90X. I used it for the first 3 weeks as suggested, then took a week off, now i’m doing it again for another three weeks. I haven’t had any side effects. So in my experience it’s been fine.

    I’m curious, what are dangers of taking these two ingredients together that you’ve read about? Maybe I can answer your question better if I knew why they shouldn’t be taken together.

    Regarding mixing L-Carnitine and Yohimbe, both these supplements do different things but they also have some overlap in that they also both increase your heart rate (in different ways). Many fat burners contains these two supplements in them so I wouldn’t worry about it. As long as you are reasonably healthy, and as long as you start off slow (taking the minimum dosage), you should be fine. That be said, taking fat burners is pretty much like playing with fire. If you aren’t healthy enough to take fat burners (check with your doctor :)), then you should not be taking any form of fat burner what so ever.

    I lost 23lbs in 5 weeks, I was not fat, did not take steroids, the only thing I took was caffeine and that was to have a good workout, but I have done that for years. I have been bodybuilding(naturally, non competitively) for years and I decided to enter a contest. I tried the eca stack before and lost a few pounds but never could get below 9-10% bodyfat. I decided to just cut my carbs to 50g every day and my calories to 1500-2000. My protein stays about 175-225g every day. I started at 224-226lbs and in 4 weeks I was about 206, then down to 199 at about 6-7 weeks. It was very strange, The first week I lost the usual water weight and then not much for about 4 days, then BOOM! Weight was dropping every day like magic, NO JOKE. Anyway, I didn’t lose a lot of muscle like they say, I just got hard and compliments were coming from everywhere. I was always muscular and without a belly but I didn’t really know how much people noticed until I got ripped(4% bodyfat). I always thought you needed drugs or supplements to get this way but it’s not true. Low Carbs+cardio(1-2 times a day + workouts) = amazing results!
    Now I am doing cardio twice a day and working a split training day. I am 43. I have 3 kids, work, a mortgage and I find the time without neglecting my family. My metabolism is high enough for me to sustain 100-200 carbs every day without gaining. You just need to jump start it and keep up the cardio. I promise, I have heard a lot of bs on these sites and in gyms, but this is the truth. All I need to workout is a Caffeine pill($7 dollars buys 100 at cvs) before my workout, headphones plugged to my smart phone so I can listen to music while working out, and cardio before I eat in the morning and after my workout(this is important) and it works for me, I can not promise it will for you, but this is no BS!     Im having a tough time with the fat loss myself, I dropped a lot of weight but am still overweight (wearing 2x – 3 x shirts. I workout 5 times a week in a very high tempo boot camp with a personal trainer, not a day i leave that Im not drenched in sweat and heart pounding. I havea very decent diet, that I am comign in jsut aroudn the cals that all the calculators say i should be (3,000 or so not sure the exact number this minute).

    I have kicked around the ECA stack, and your suggestions are very new to me, is there any other reading I can do on these or did you just come across the idea one day? both EC and your recommendation both have Caffeine as a major part of it it seems, how do you know these other supplements did anything for you?

    Also, apparently I overproduce cortisol and under produce testosterone, so my adrenal glands rent so hot right now, any idea how the adrenaline stuff would affect that?

    also one last thing, I have a hell of a time making it through my workouts, any suggestions on that, sometimes i just have 0 energy it seems.

    Wow, I’ve written this article a while ago and it’s interesting that my views have somewhat changed on fat burners.

    I first came across this stack minus the sesamin a long while ago, but the best write up I’ve seen of this can be found on this stubborn fat article.

    With that said: in general, I wouldn’t recommend this stack, the ECA stack, or any fat burners for someone like you. I believe fat burners have a couple uses:

    1. Use temporarily to give you a quick jumpstart on your fat loss (e.g. you never worked out before, and you are starting to diet and exercise). This helps with energy levels and gives a great motivational boost.
    2. Use temporarily to help you burn off excess fat for some kind of bodybuilding competition.

    It seems like you are already “hardening the f**k up”, doing what you need to do, and it’ll just take time to get you there. There’s no rush to get there right?

    I’d rather see people cure themselves with good habits and good diet instead of just taking some pills. Note that when you take fat burners, there will be a point when you will have to stop taking them (health reasons). The last thing you’ll ever want to do is reach a fat loss plateau while on fat burners. This is because when you stop taking them, you won’t know what nutrition and exercise intensity your body needs to even maintain that plateau.

    Circling back to the diet. What’s your macronutrient in your diet exactly? Have you looked into something like intermittent fasting? I’m currently on LeanGain right now, working out 3 days a week, and it’s giving me ridiculous results (best shape of my life without using any fat burners).

    Yes I take fish oil at the same time (mainly for convenience). I try to shoot for 6g of combined EPA/DHA per day and split them up evenly in 3 doses when I stack them with E and C.
